Although we don’t want to get stuck in a rut getting frustrated by all of these challenges, it’s important that we take some time to consider how COVID-19 has affected some key areas of our business operations. A great example of this is WEEE recycling. The government has announced that they will be providing financial support for recyclers of electrical waste. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Fund (WEEE) will enable Approved Authorised Treatment Facilities to continue their operations during the pandemic.

The key WEEE fund details that you need to know are as follows:

● The fund consists of over £5 million in loans
● The support loans and grants are available for electronic waste recyclers
● The annual WEEE compliance fee has financed this fund
● This funding is designed to help businesses which have found that COVID-19 has caused their sites to receive a restricted influx of WEEE.
● The COVID-19 pandemic has closed Household Waste Recycling Centres across the country. In addition, roadside WEEE collections have also been significantly disrupted.
● The electrical waste treatment facilities will be able to apply for loans (which will be interest-free)
● Charitable reuse organisations will have access to £600,000 worth of grants
● Organisations can apply for loans now, and the deadline is the end of May 2020
● The applications will need to be written up in accordance with the compliance evidence that was issued for any treatment of waste that took place in 2019
